  1. There are only fourteen peaks in the world that rise to over 8000 metres.

  2. All of them are here, in the Himalayas.

  3. Lethally cold, scoured by gales and blizzards,

  12. They may only be a fraction of the height of the Himalayas,

  15. Yet Nubian ibex have made this their home.

  18. But living in this sanctuary comes with a cost.

  19. These nursery slopes are so steep,

  38. This is what ibex were born to do.

  54. A golden eagle has to spend every daylight hour

  55. scanning the slopes for something, somewhere, to eat.

  56. Her seven-foot wingspan allows her to glide effortlessly

  89. Yet one animal spends the whole winter slumbering

  91. And when spring comes, they emerge.

  92. All across these mountains,

  93. grizzly bears make their winter dens

  110. In the Rockies, seasonal change is swift and dramatic.

  116. So the bears must feed as fast as they can.

  149. He hunts by listening for the faintest sound of movement.

  161. For this particular valley is blessed.

  163. It's fed by a volcanic hot spring

  164. that heats these waters

  165. to 50 degrees warmer than the surrounding air.

  166. Hungry animals of all kinds come here to feed.

  272. Seldom seen, the detail of their lives has long been a mystery,

  273. but now, at last, helped by the latest remote-camera technology,

  274. we are getting closer to them than ever before.
